"Advocacy in Action: How the Georgia NAACP's Legislative Day Is Shaping Policy in Georgia"

Georgia NAACP Hosts Legislative Day at the Georgia State Capitol

NAACP GA President: “Georgians are Black, Proud, and loud about our rights.”

ATLANTA – Today, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP hosted their annual Legislative Day rally, on the Association’s 115th Founder’s Day, to highlight their 2024 policy priorities. Leaders and organizers from statewide gathered in the spirit of democracy to increase voter awareness and engagement ahead of upcoming elections.

Gerald Griggs, President of the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, shared the following statement:

“Time and time again, Black Georgians mobilize in historic numbers, casting deciding ballots and showing the rest of the nation what it looks like to be civically engaged. The Georgia State Conference of the NAACP sees it as our duty to amplify their voices. We are living proof that there is no democracy without the Black vote. If state legislators are invested in promoting democracy at the state-level, they must prioritize the needs of the Black community. Today’s rally, and subsequent meetings underscore what we’ve always known to be true - Georgians are Black, Proud, and loud about our rights. Together, we will build a more equitable society, ensuring unrestricted access to the ballot and upholding the principles of true democracy.”

NAACP unit leaders from across Georgia met with state legislators at the State Capitol to talk through the most pressing issues for the Black community of Georgia. Top policy priorities discussed during the meeting include:

* Medicaid Expansion

* Voting Rights

* Economic Development

* Police Accountability

The rally saw over 150 community members, leaders, and advocates in attendance to support the Georgia State Conference’s voter engagement efforts. The NAACP continues to be a national leader in Black voter advocacy, with over a century of history in the fight for voting rights.
