Georgia’s War on DEI in Schools Draws Sharp Rebuke from Georgia NAACP

Georgia NAACP’s Statement in Opposition to the Elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs in Georgia Schools

We are disappointed by the decision of Georgia to comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s directive to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in our schools. This move is not only short-sighted—it is a direct threat to the values of fairness, representation, and opportunity that should be at the heart of public education.

DEI programs are not political statements; they are vital tools for creating learning environments where all students—regardless of race, background, ability, or identity—can thrive. These initiatives provide critical support for marginalized students, help address historic inequities, and equip young people to live and lead in an increasingly diverse world.

By choosing to prioritize federal funding over fundamental fairness, Georgia is sending a chilling message: that the inclusion and success of all students is negotiable. It is not. We reject the notion that equity is a threat. On the contrary, equity is essential to educational excellence.

We call on leaders across the state—educators, parents, students, and advocates—to speak out against this dangerous rollback. We will not sit quietly while efforts to erase progress are disguised as compliance. Our schools must be places where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

We stand united in our commitment to protect the progress that DEI represents and to continue the fight for a just and inclusive educational system for all.
