Civil rights attorney and Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs delivered the keynote address at the Fayette County NAACP’s Unmasking event, a gathering focused on truth, justice, and community action.
The theme, “Unmasking Freedom: A Night of Truth and Truimph,” set the tone for an evening centered on exposing injustice and calling for accountability. In his remarks, Griggs emphasized the importance of confronting systemic inequality, misinformation, and complacency.
“Unmasking is about more than removing a cover — it’s about revealing the truth and challenging the systems that try to hide it,” Griggs told the audience. He underscored that the NAACP has always served as both a shield to protect rights and a sword to cut down barriers of racism, discrimination, and inequity.

Griggs highlighted three central points in his keynote:
Unmasking Racism: Identifying how bias persists in schools, workplaces, and the justice system.
Unmasking Power: Demanding accountability from institutions that fail to serve the people.
Unmasking Truth: Countering misinformation with facts, history, and courage.
The event drew community members of all ages, from young leaders ready to take the baton to veteran advocates who have long stood on the front lines. Griggs praised Fayette County’s spirit of resilience and activism, noting that civil rights work is generational and ongoing.
